Aamir Khan is celebrating his birthday today. As the actor turns 54, the actor has cemented his reputation as the perfectionist, a man whose every film has something new to offer. The year 2018, however, saw him delivering a flop, Thugs of Hindostan — his first in 18 years, but the trade dismisses it as a blip in an otherwise successful career.
Thugs of Hindostan collected around Rs 151 crore at the domestic box office but failed to recover its cost. The actor who has often broken his own box office records had last faced disappointment with Mela in 2000.
On being asked about the impact of Thugs of Hindostan on his career, film trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “Aamir’s track record has been so phenomenal that one Thugs of Hindostan can have no major impact on his track record. It’s like a minor aberration. A flop can be said to have an impact if either the hero’s price becomes a question mark or producers stop queuing up outside the hero’s home. Neither has happened in Aamir’s case post TOH. Producers are still dying to work with Aamir.”
However, Aamir’s fans are still hopeful that the film may recover its costs from various sources such as satellite rights and overseas collections. On being enquired about the same, Nahta says, “It’s a flop. It’s total collections should have been at least 250 crore in India. It stopped at 150.”
Aamir not just realised what went wrong but also apologised for letting his fans down. In a formal apology, Aamir had said at India’s Storytellers Script Contest, “I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure that we tried our level best. There are people who have liked the film a lot and we would like to thank them. Majority of the people did not like the film and we are aware of the fact. So there is no doubt that we did go wrong. I want to apologise to the viewers who came to watch my film in the theatres as I was not able to entertain them despite trying my best.”
The Dangal actor, however, believes in moving ahead and devotes himself completely to every project he puts his hands on. The actor is now reportedly working on his dream project Mahabharat and as confirmed by Shah Rukh Khan in a candid chat with DNA, he will be playing Krishna on screen. And we hope he doesn’t miss the mark this time.
