Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the most decorated player in the history of the UEFA Champions League. The player has a knack for delivering in the most adverse of conditions, and the most prestigious club competition has been fortunate enough to see plenty of those over the years.
Last week, he scored a brilliant hat-trick to knock Atletico Madrid out of the competition, once again highlighting his unmatched determination and technical ability. In the light of his latest exploits, we take a look at his favourite opponents. Here are five top teams who have suffered the most at the hands of CR7.
5. Ajax – 7 Goals
The Dutch side have sensationally knocked Real Madrid out of the competition this season, but they were indeed lucky that one certain Portuguese superstar wasn’t there to punish them at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Cristiano Ronaldo has faced Ajax only in group stages, and barring the first Group G game in 2010/11, he has scored in all other matches, registering 7 goals and 2 assists in 4 appearances.
4. Borussia Dortmund – 7 Goals
Borussia Dortmund have been a difficult team to face for Real Madrid. However, for Cristiano Ronaldo, they have been just another adversity to be overcome. In the 2012/13 campaign, Real Madrid took on Dortmund a total of four times, with Ronaldo scoring one goal each in the first leg of the group stage and semi-final tie.
Next season, they met again, and Ronaldo scored a goal in a 3-0 quarter-final first-leg win. In the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, they met again in group stages, with Ronaldo scoring 4 goals in 4 appearances.
3. Atletico Madrid – 7 Goals
Atletico Madrid were taken apart by Ronaldo last Tuesday, and historically, too, they have been quite poor against the Portuguese superstar.
In hindsight, his performance against Atletico looks a bit erratic. He first scored against them in the 2013/14 Champions League final and drew blanks in the next two seasons. He returned with a hat-trick in the 2016/17 semifinals, before netting another treble, this time for Juventus, last Tuesday.
2. Bayern Munich – 9 Goals
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are two of the most decorated teams in the competition and their rivalry, too, is one of the biggest spectacles.
In the 2011/12 semi-final, Ronaldo scored twice in the return leg but failed to lead his side to the final. In 2013/14, he made amends by scoring a brace in the return leg of their semi-final. Three seasons later, they met in the quarters, with Ronaldo scoring five goals in their two-legged affair.
1. Juventus – 10 Goals
Ironically, it’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s current employers, Juventus who have suffered the most at his hands. During his time at Real Madrid, the two teams met a number of times in the competition, and Cristiano Ronaldo almost always prevailed.
He has played a total of 7 games against Juventus and surprisingly he has scored in all of them. Out of his 10 goals, 3 have come in the 2013/14 group stages, 2 in the 2014/15 semi-final, 2 in the 2016/17 final, and finally, 3 in the 2017/18 quarter-final.
