Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has opened up on rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick for Juventus against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, claiming that the Portugese was “impressive.”

Ronaldo showed everyone just why he is one of the greatest footballers in the history of the sport by single-handedly helping Juventus qualify for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with his heroics, but Messi was not to be left behind netting a brace of his own to help the Catalan’s progress to their 12th consecutive quarter-final.

The 31-year-old expressed surprise at Juventus’ comeback win over Atletico but did go on to praise his counterpart, claiming, “The thing about Cristiano and Juventus yesterday was impressive, it was a big surprise, Juventus went over Atletico, I hoped they would have more strength,” as quoted by Mirror.

“Juventus has a lot of potential and Cristiano had a magical night with his three goals.”

Messi’s performance against Lyon should come as no surprise considering that he has been in brilliant form this season, netting 36 goals in 36 games and has now taken his Champions League goalscoring tally to 108 in 131 appearances.

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Friday where Barcelona could come up against Ronaldo’s Juventus, while Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Porto and Ajax are also potential opponents.
