Chelsea midfielder Willian has claimed that the criticism faced by Jorginho not only affects the player but also the team as a whole, despite the midfielder registering the most passes than any other player in the Premier League this season.
Jorginho was brought in by manager Maurizio Sarri from Napoli, and he has been playing in the role previously occupied by N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman has had to readjust his game as Sarri is now playing Kante further forward than he is normally used to.
However, with Jorginho more or less negated by the opposition players and his influence stifled in games, there has been increasing criticism over his performances, but Willian does not agree that Jorginho has been a failure.
“I think this is unfair from them,” he told a news conference, according to Goal. “Of course, I don’t want to stay here talking about this situation, but when they do that, we don’t feel good inside the pitch.
“So, even when the players aren’t in good moments or play well, we need the fans to support us until the end of the game. Jorginho is very important for us, a very good player. We know his quality,” the Brazil winger added.
It remains to be seen if Jorginho will be able to break away from the shackles that opposition teams seem to have put on him, but he still retains the trust of the manager and his teammates as they fight for a place in next season’s Champions League.
